Bambusa Multiplex c.v. Goldstripe is the most popular choice for a smaller tropical feel and for privacy screening. Goldstripe is perfect for screening out single storey developments, fences, tight spaces and great in planter boxes. Perfect in planter boxes on apartment balconies. Goldstripe grow 3-4m in the ground and 3m in planter boxes.
Slender Weaver and Goldstripe will provide a full and dense privacy screen top to bottom in 12-18 months. Slender Weaver and Goldstripe can be hedge down to a minimum height of 2m if required.
Goldstripe, Malay and Chinese Dwarf grow 3-4m in the ground and 3m in planter boxes. Timor Black is more of a feature plant growing 10-12m in the ground.
All our bamboos are best planted at 1 meter intervals to achieve a tight dense screen. If planting in planter boxes, 2 plants per meter is recommended. Planter boxes should be 1m x 45cm x 45cm. If garden beds are narrower than 1m then best to plant a little closer at 750mm intervals.
Bamboos are drought tolerant so very little watering is required making this the perfect hedging /screening plant for our harsh dry conditions. Bamboo is a grass; best fertilisers are Seasol, Osmocote or Lawn Builder.
Bamboos in the 1.5-3m range reach maximum height and density quicker than any other sized bamboos because their roots system is still soft and healthy. Bamboos in the 3-4m range in the 300m pots are leftover unsold stock that have become rootbound from being in the pots/bags too long. Although they may look good initially, once planted leaves fall off within months with little to no screening exposing the canes. Recovery can take years with little chance of ever reaching full height, maturity and will never acheive a healthy green look. Juvenile bamboos can take up to 6 months to settle in before they take off as they are quite immature and risk not surviving.
We therefore strongly recommend purchasing in the “sweet spot”: 1.5-3m range to achieve a continuous fast rate of growth
It’s important to ensure your bamboos stems and foliage are fresh vivid green and not pale or yellowing. Yellowing is common when bamboos become root bound from being in pots too long (3-4m ranges) and when they are under stress from poor propagation and lack of professional care.
